Basic Woodworking Workshop

One half day – typically a weekend – 8:00 am to 12 noon.

Focus and Benefit:  Only a single participant (maximizes instructor focus and student learning).  You are not in a large class – the focus is on you and your educational needs!

Example: Picture illustrates what one student built in a half-day with modest setup.

Typical Contents (Specific items can be chosen to focus on):

·      Safe use of power tools: table saw, drill press, planer, and band saw.

·      Students may select a project from my textbook (or a project of their own) and are led through all the steps involved in turning lumber into a finished project. 

·      Alternatively, students can choose a particular skill they wish to focus on from the list below:

o   Project planning and cutlists

o   Lumber selection

o   Milling and making boards 4 square

o   Joinery (dovetails, lap joints, box joints, miters joints, scarf joints, floating tenons, cabinet joinery, tabletop to leg joinery, etc.)

o   Creating decorative woodwork

o   Assembly and glue-up

o   Sanding and finishing

·      Additional topics can be chosen:

o   Sharpening and tuning planes and chisels

o   Making jigs, fixtures, and templates

o   Understanding wood shrinkage and expansion

o   Use of various measuring and marking tools

o   Tool selections for beginning woodworkers

o   Shop layout – alternatives and recommendations
